This stream-of-consciousness snippet, from primarily the mind of Mr. Bloom in James Joyce's Ulysses, contains a reference to the nineteenth-century stage illusion "Pepper's Ghost." It's nice to see that magic history makes it into what many consider to be the most important work of modernist fiction.
